Theory: The thickness theory of the series-SD silica thicker is because of the existence of the silanol radical on its surface. The silanol radical on the grain surface can make up the tri-dimension vacuum structure to circle the medium around. So it can prevent the filler and pigment from sinking in the paints. Under the effect of the mechanical (shaking, stirring, brushing and painting), the tri-dimension structure will be resolved. Losing the outside force, the system come back quiescent status to form the tri-dimension through the hydrogen bond. That is the character of the thixotropic thickness.
